Newly reupholstered chair: pin-up fabric printed by Spoonflower

I regret not taking a “before” photo of this Danish modern chair I purchased at a Brooklyn flea market a couple of months ago ($80- booyah!). The fabric was ratty and hideous but I knew that I was going to have it reupholstered with my own print in a matter of time. I had just completed this design for Craft Magazine that was printed for a feature on Spoonflower so I contacted them about printing up my pin-up/starlot design for me.

They are not officially doing upholstery weight fabric yet but happened to have canvas laying around in the yardage I needed. I can’t believe how accessible they are and willing to work with artist requests. I spoke with Stephen Fraser who talked me through the process of uploading my fabric. Then I had a tailor cover the old cushions with my new design of starlots. I even had them add trim. I love the way it looks now. I actually planned the colorway to go with my walls and the painting I did of my dear friend. I’m really excited to use Spoonflower again soon. I have a trade show coming up so I better get going with my next order!

    that looks GREAT samantha!

what is the weight of the fabric?

  10. Samantha Hahn December 17, 2008 at 6:23 am #

it’s just canvas, plain canvas I don’t know the weight but it feels good for upholstery. I will scotch guard it though. Does that answer your question? I can email Stephen if you want more specifics..?

This is so totally adorable and looks just fab in your house Sam! Isn’t uploading and making repeats fun? Just kidding. It almost killed us about a month ago when we had to make a 63″x48″ repeat. Big sigh, it’s done now.

    xo Mary Jo

eeek that is a big one!! I do love making repeats but I think the biggest I ever made was 21 inches. Spoonflower is a great service. What were you making such a big one for?

thanks Lisa!! I’m working on some different colorways for it…like orange and pink….fun fun….You’ll have to come over and sit in it sometime. I think you saw it when I had it covered in a sheet?

I suck at life, so instead of focusing on the chair, I stare at the portrait. Whose painting is that?

  27. Samantha Hahn December 1, 2009 at 10:59 am #

ha…thanks so much. I did it years ago of my best friend!

at the moment i am planning to upholster my dining chair using spoonflower fabric. but i read somewhere that digital printed fabric wont last long, means the printing will fade what do you think? is the fabric texture great for upholstery works?

  32. Samantha Hahn March 28, 2014 at 9:50 am #

I’ve had mine for years. Just make sure you use upholstery weight fabric and you can also scotch guard it!
