Male artist series day 3: Tom Forget

Tom Forget male artist deries day 3

I’m so happy to have Tom Forget here on Maquette for a little feature. I’ve known him since college. He’s an illustrator/ designer/writer/editor/philosopher/scientist/detective/songwriter. His illustration reflects his obsession with film Noir, horror, comic books, punk rock, pin-up girls etc. He shuns ‘legitimate’ culture like a vampire avoids the sun. In addition to writing and designing book covers he and his uber talented buddies contribute to and publish Mammal Magazine. Here’s where I’ve mentioned Mammal. Basically Tom rocks.

Here’s an interview to prove it:

When you were a kid what were your artistic inspirations?
Universal Studios monster movies, 80s action films, and Comic books.

What are your main inspirations now?
Film Noir movie posters, 70s horror films and posters, 70s horror comics, Jack Kirby, Pulp paperback covers, 50s-60s skin magazines, 70s exploitation movies and softcore pornography (and grindhouse cinema in general), Old punk and hardcore band flyers, Heavy Metal t-shirts, Pushead, The Misfits and Glenn Danzig, Fashion, Bettie Page, Twin Peaks, Douglas Sirk films, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and about a million crime novelists.

What has been your favorite project to date?

Hmmmm..I’d say putting together MAMMAL Magazine #002 and all of the peripherals that went along with it was the most satisfying project I’ve been involved in.

What would your dream project be?
A Cover painting or series of cover paintings for any kind of erotic crime or horror comic.  Like VAMPIRELLA type stuff, but a little more lurid.

Besides paper what other surface would you most like to see your work printed on?

T-shirts.  Absolutely.

Favorite artist of all time?
Jack Kirby: The King.

…………..

Just a little addendum, one Halloween during college Tom dressed up as Rorschach from Watchmen so adroitly he even wore a white stocking over his face. I was like “who the hell are you supposed to be?”.

Tom was ahead of us all. Still is.
