Male artist series day 3: Tom Forget

Tom Forget male artist deries day 3

I’m so happy to have Tom Forget here on Maquette for a little feature. I’ve known him since college. He’s an illustrator/ designer/writer/editor/philosopher/scientist/detective/songwriter. His illustration reflects his obsession with film Noir, horror, comic books, punk rock, pin-up girls etc. He shuns ‘legitimate’ culture like a vampire avoids the sun. In addition to writing and designing book covers he and his uber talented buddies contribute to and publish Mammal Magazine. Here’s where I’ve mentioned Mammal. Basically Tom rocks.

Here’s an interview to prove it:

When you were a kid what were your artistic inspirations?
Universal Studios monster movies, 80s action films, and Comic books.

What are your main inspirations now?
Film Noir movie posters, 70s horror films and posters, 70s horror comics, Jack Kirby, Pulp paperback covers, 50s-60s skin magazines, 70s exploitation movies and softcore pornography (and grindhouse cinema in general), Old punk and hardcore band flyers, Heavy Metal t-shirts, Pushead, The Misfits and Glenn Danzig, Fashion, Bettie Page, Twin Peaks, Douglas Sirk films, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and about a million crime novelists.

What has been your favorite project to date?

Hmmmm..I’d say putting together MAMMAL Magazine #002 and all of the peripherals that went along with it was the most satisfying project I’ve been involved in.

What would your dream project be?
A Cover painting or series of cover paintings for any kind of erotic crime or horror comic.  Like VAMPIRELLA type stuff, but a little more lurid.

Besides paper what other surface would you most like to see your work printed on?

T-shirts.  Absolutely.

Favorite artist of all time?
Jack Kirby: The King.

…………..

Just a little addendum, one Halloween during college Tom dressed up as Rorschach from Watchmen so adroitly he even wore a white stocking over his face. I was like “who the hell are you supposed to be?”.

Tom was ahead of us all. Still is.

Male artist series day 2: Dan Funderburgh

Dan Funderburgh 1
Dan Funderburgh 2

I’m super excited to feature Dan Funderburgh as a part of my series on male artists. I was lucky to have him participate in my Love book. His sister is amazing too. Dan is a multi-talented artist specializing in wallpaper design. He’s resides in Brooklyn. His patterns, prints and installations are varied in content but all demonstrate an unabashed love for decorative arts. With influences ranging from 14th century Moorish mosaic to 60’s American op art, the work is a repudiation of the fabricated schism between art and decoration. Some of Dan’s work can be found in the collections of the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum and the Miami Museum of Modern Art.

Here’s my little interview with the man himself:
When you were a kid what were your artistic inspirations?
Tintin

What are your main inspirations now?
Everything. But lately especially science.

What has been your favorite project to date?
Wallpapering my soccer team’s club house in Vienna.

What would your dream project be?

Oval office.

Besides paper what other surface would you most like to see your work printed on?

Not printed, but woven into massive tapestries.

Favorite artist of all time?

Stevie Wonder

………………..

Thanks so much for stopping by Maquette, Dan. I think you are tremendous. Plus I adore Stevie Wonder. Music Aquarium and Talking Book are the best. Stay tuned this week dear readers for some other male artists I adore.

Male artist series day 1: Christopher David Ryan

christopher david ryan

This week I’m kicking off a series on my favorite male artists.  I recently hung 3 pieces of CD Ryan’s in my livingroom. Here’s a little interview with the amazing Portland, Maine-based graphic artist, daydreamer, pseudo-scientist, wanna-be astronaut and untrained intellectual who tends to find inspiration in pretty much anything… especially music, the universe, the human condition and natural phenomena, Christopher David Ryan. Also check out, Atmostheory and Hello Sleepyhead. Now for the interview:

When you were a kid what were your artistic inspirations?

There were a few years in my childhood when drawing comics was my dream.  By the time I reached junior high I was convinced that I would be an architect.  I would design modern homes, be handsome, wear suits, have a lovely family wife, kids, home, car, etc… and I would be adored by the masses as well as my colleagues for opening the worlds eyes to my profound discipline.  Keep in mind this whole time I really wasn’t into architecture.  I knew little about it besides the obvious… but I knew I liked using rulers and mechanical pencils.  In my career currently, I feel like I can see the comic artist and the architect inside me working in a partnership.

What are your main inspirations now?

My inspirations now are less obvious to me.  I used to be overly focused on “this is what I’m into… this style, etc… and so that is what will be my inspiration”.  In the past few years I feel like I have yet go of that and just let my senses wonder.  I still find inspiration in all of the artist, designers and musicians that I’ve always loved, but now I’m starting to just catch little things as they pass through my mind… a word, a sentence, a misunderstood song lyric, a reflection, things I don’t understand, the human condition, etc.

What has been your favorite project to date?

My “Sleepyheads” brand is without a doubt my favorite thing without a doubt.  If I had to chose one thing to devote my career to, it would be Sleepyheads.  It just means a lot to me.  It comes from a very personal place.

What would your dream project be?

Creative Director, NASA

Besides paper what other surface would you most like to see your work printed on?

Air.  I suppose that’s not a surface is it?  We’ll let science decide.

Favorite artist of all time?

Of all time?  That’s a tough one.  It’s constantly changing for me… so it’s hard for me to say.  However, I will tell you that as I write this, I am fascinated by Charles Schultz.  As an adult, I see Peanuts in a completely different light.

………………

Thanks so much for stopping by Maquette dear Christopher!!! I love your work so much. Hope you do too readers.
