Father’s Day

Father’s day is so bitter sweet for me. I lost my dad a couple of years ago and still suffer from the grief of not having him with us. I know that we’d be with him tomorrow if he were here and that Henry would say ” I love you papa”. I can really picture how it would be. Instead though, we’ll enjoy the day celebrating my husband, Henry’s dad. Henry already made a sweet card and gift at school and we’ll try to make him feel special. He’s really an amazing dad. Every weekend he makes French Toast on Saturday and pancakes on Sunday. I guess I’ll have to step up to the plate tomorrow!!

O, The Oprah Magazine: Inspiration banner

I recently did some illustrations for the May issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. They also did a really great feature on my book in the November, 2013 issue and online here. So I was thrilled when they called on me to hand-letter an inspirational quote for their office wall at Hearst. Here’s how it looks! What a great sentiment to see when you walk in to your dream job each day.

Since we moving to Brooklyn from Manhattan, I’ve head the pleasure of seeing the beautiful Kentile Floors sign from the F train window and from my walks around the hood. It’s so iconic and evocative of another time (it’s been up since the middle of the last century). I could not help but capture it with my iphone during different seasons, times of day, weather and from various vantage points. I consider it my Monet’s haystacks. So you can imagine my dismay when I noticed scaffolding over it and articles began popping up on Gothamist and in the NY Times announcing that it may be removed. Say it ain’t so?!

Night of a Thousand Judys: Art inspired by Judy Garland

I was happy to contribute this original portrait of Judy Garland to be auctioned off to benefit the Ali Forney Center. You can bid for it in the silent auction here.

From Out Magazine:

Seven artists, including Robert Risko, the longtime Vanity Fair illustrator, Olimpia Zagnoli from The New York Times and Samantha Hahn, creator of Well Read Women, have donated artistic interpretations of the actress to the benefit concert “Night of a Thousand Judys,” to raise money for the Ali Forney Center — the nation’s largest organization dedicated to homeless LGBT youth.
