Old New York

I’m a New Yorker through and through. Born and raised here for the most part. Left for my middle school and high school years to a nearby suburb which I never happily acclimated to. I came back after college and stayed. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. It’s noisy, crowded, over-priced yet full of the most ambitious, passionate people, vibrant culture and astounding history. I really can’t imagine living anywhere else though I often complain about the weather and lack of nature. I think kvetching is part of my duty as a New Yorker though so I’m not doing much to quell it. I love these photos of New York in the old days. They make me think of this great essay from one of my favorite authors, E.B White:
There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born there, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size, its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter — the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something ….Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness, natives give it solidity and continuity, but the settlers give it passion.

Andy Warhol

What an absolutely dreary day here in NYC! I’ll sign off for the week with some Andy Warhol, one of my all time favorite artists (especially his early illustration work). Leave it to him to glam up my screen view. I hope you have a truly splendid weekend. Spring is coming. I for one can’t wait.

Here are some of my favorite Andy quotes for you to ponder as the weekend approaches:

1. I’m afraid that if you look at a thing long enough, it loses all of its meaning.

2. I’m the type who’d be happy not going anywhere as long as I was sure I knew exactly what was happening at the places I wasn’t going to. I’m the type who’d like to sit home and watch every party that I’m invited to on a monitor in my bedroom.

3. They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.

4. I suppose I have a really loose interpretation of “work,” because I think that just being alive is so much work at something you don’t always want to do. The machinery is always going. Even when you sleep.

  3. Andy and Edie (I’m guessing at Studio 54)

If you have curls like me, you know you are limited when it comes to styling options. So these simple and yet totally stunning looks were made for us curly girls and all we need is a couple of bobbi pins! Finally!!
