Gregory Blackstock: Outsider artist/collector (guest blog post by Yasmine Surovec)

gregory blackstock
Hi Everyone,

I’m in California. Please welcome the uber talented Yasmine of: a print a day!

XO,
Sam

Hello Maquette Readers!

I am SO happy (and extremely flattered) to be asked by
one of the most extremely talented and lovely people
I’ve encountered online. And this would be a great
opportunity to share with you some of the things that
I love, and I get to do it in one of the most creative
blogs out there! So thanks Samantha!

I love folk/outsider art. And one of the artists who I
find extremely fascinating is Gregory Blackstock. A
former dishwasher for 25 years, Blackstock is an
autistic and artistic savant who can speak 12
languages, can play any instrument he can pick up, and
can draw just about anything from memory with
precision.

I love his book, and some of his work for Commes des Garcons! You can read more about Blackstock at the Garde rail and Seattle Weekly.

And here’s a video of Blackstock showing off his
drawings :):

I’ve been dying to add this new section to my site with text related work. I had so much fun creating these pieces. I hope you like.

I’m busily preparing for a trip to California. I’m so excited I’m going to finally meet Mary Jo Matsumoto in person and Erin Loechner (by the way, Erin of DFM’s new Mankind Magazine is available for free download, it’s issue 2) in the L.A area. Then Dave and I are heading to the Santa Barbara area to go to some vineyards and stuff like that. The we are going to San Francisco. I have a bunch of meetings to show my portfolio and some mocked up ideas to companies and art directors I want to work with. I’m so excited. I just got a new portfolio from House of Portfolios (I’ve never had a nice one). So we’re tying up loose ends and finishing a few freelance jobs and then jet-set-go.

You are never going to want me back here. Maquette has some incredible guest posters next week. I can’t thank them enough. You must tune in to see the amazing posts they’ve whipped up. You’ll be welcoming Yasmine of “a print a day“, Jessica of “Treasuring“, Jules of “Brandbird“, and Abbey of “Abbey Goes Design Scouting” with a few little posts I prepared in advance for you too. So Maquette won’t be dormant. Tune in.

Nina Braun: soft sculpture and more…

Nina Braun

I love Nina Braun’s work! I found it on Art Moco of course. She does everything from graphics, to textile pictures, to skateboards, to clothing…..she’s amazing. I love how uni-sex everything is too. If you want to buy some Nina goods check out her shop.

Here’s a snippet on Nina in her own words:
“Nina Braun is immersed in an analogue world, where the obsession with material and her devotion to each individual object emerges from her very personal imagery.

Her approach to materials like wool and fabric are the base for her sometimes child-like and naive objects that result from an intensive working process. Considering that we are living in a digital era where economical aspects of the working process prevail and thoughts and images can be infinitely reproduced, Nina Braun’s approach to work is quite revolutionary.”

The fabulous news is her newest venture into jewelry. Check out her stunning new work Listen Lady. I already emailed her about a white “S” sign language pendant.

Hanna Konola: Finnish artist

Hanna Konola

I love this work by Hanna Konola.

Hanna’s work is so delicate and peaceful it makes me want to sigh. I love the negative space especially.

On another note, I wore my Maciun dress to Dave’s birthday party and tried to take a picture of the back of it. I love the way this photo came out:
