Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight

Milton Glaser

I was thrilled to receive an advanced screener dvd of a documentary on the most amazing designer/illustrator/teacher in the world, Milton Glaser. It’s is scheduled to debut April 27th. New Video Films is giving a signed copy of one of Glaser’s most iconic pieces/documentary poster to one of you, my dear Maquette readers! Leave a comment below and I’ll pick a winner at random over the weekend and contact you for your mailing address.

I have known Glaser’s work for some time but the film showed so many illustrations, logos and designs I recognized but never knew as his. Most people know Glaser for the iconic I heartNY (but did you know that he didn’t make a dime from it? And still doesn’t!?). I have a special affinity for Glaser who played such an integral role in shaping the NY of today from founding The New Yorker to creating so many visual spaces we (New Yorkers are so familiar with).

I once lived near a townhouse with the words “Art is Work” above the entry. I noticed it was Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast’s work space: Pushpin Studios. How thrilling to live a few blocks away from such inspiration! You can’t live in New York without seeing Glaser’s billboards or his signage work.

I highly recommend the DVD. It’s a fascinating portrait of a man who followed his dream and maintained his status as a ground breaking master of ideas, craft, and the ability to communicate ideas visually. We can all be inspired by a person so willing to push the envelope while at the same time portray a culture and ideas with such aplomb. “The documentary offers audiences a much richer appreciation for one of the great modern renaissance men, who has recently been honored by President Obama with the 2009 National Medal of Arts.”

Felted vases: Papaver Vert

felted vases

How sweet are these felted vases? So bright and colorful. I like their styling shots with the Forsythia. I’d love to get a fuschia bud vase and put some cherry blossom stalks in it. Or perhaps some bright yellow daffodils would look nice. For the winter I’d get a striped plant cozy and plant a succulent in it.

I love his work.

Hope you all had a lovely weekend. We did. In fact is was particularly delicious. Saturday night we had a babysitter come and went to Red Hook to our friend’s apartment. They made us whiskey sours and homemade pizzas with portabello mushrooms on them. Sunday, we went to brunch down the block, I had a goat cheese and veggie frittata, then we went to the botanical gardens and looked at the koi, walked under the cherry blossom trees and laid in the grass. Later that day we went to a patio party at our friend’s house and ate homemade ice cream sandwiches while everyone adored Henry and made sweet faces at him. I couldn’t ask for a better couple of days, now back to work.

Strawberry, apple and buckwheat crumble: Cannelle et Vanille

Strawberry, Apple and Buckwheat Crumble

I’m not a big baker. I love to cook dinner and brunch for friends. My specialty is filo casserole with gruyere, asparagus and shaved almonds for dinner. For brunch I love to make french toast out of sour dough bread, fresh whipped cream, black berries, pecans and 100% maple syrup.

I definitely lack when it comes to dessert. Usually I just pick up cookies at a bakery or serve ice cream….boring. I just stumbled across the most delicious and simple dessert. I can’t wait to eat it make it! Of course the amazing photos make it look so enticing.
