1964 Advertisement: Striped shirt types

60's advertising_Striped shirt types
I have this great little Taschen book on vintage fashion and beauty ads. I got it years ago, before the Mad Men craze hit. I loved it then but even more now since the show. I feel like I get to see what it was like behind the scenes at the agencies that made these ads. Yes, I know Mad Men is fictitious, still I can imagine the discussion that went into choosing the types of people who would wear these striped shirts.

Aphro Chic + the NY Times!

Happy to share news of a great collaboration that just came to fruition! Fellow design blogger, Jeanine of Aphro Chic approached me to illustrate and design some products for her amazing Brooklyn Renaissance collection (cushions, place mats and shower curtains). I was thrilled to create images stemming from a Brooklyn theme. It’s my home and I love it! Today the collection was featured in the New York Times, Home & Garden section. Jeanine and I are pinching ourselves. My agency posted all the pillows on their blog.

Here’s an excerpt from the my interview about the illustrations in the Times:

Ms. Hahn imagined four style icons: women from Fort Greene, Park Slope, Boerum Hill and Clinton Hill ($105 each). Rather than aiming for a microcultural stereotype, she was after a certain aesthetic, she said: “Like a Brooklyn design blogger — she’s urban, she likes music and flea markets, she wants to come home and put her feet up in her chic brownstone with its midcentury furniture. The girls are interchangeable. You could put them in any of those neighborhoods. They are all the new bohemians.”

I’m signing off for the weekend now to gather my thoughts, work on freelance projects, personal projects and most importantly to spend time with my baby and husband! Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Thanks, as always, for your kind comments on this blog and facebook. XO.

Aesopica: Group show at Rare Device

Horse and groom_for Aesopica Show

I was thrilled when Anna and Sean of Sub-Studio, Working Proof and Brevity fame asked me to create a piece for the Aesopica show at Rare Device (official show announcement here).

  • The show runs November 19 through January 9 in the Rare Device project space (opening November 19 from 7-9pm).
  • Both original artwork and prints will be available, as well as a show catalog printed by Blurb. Aesopica was inspired by the work that 826 National does in helping kids and teenagers with expository and creative writing skills. 15% of the gross proceeds from the show will be donated to the local chapter of 826 National, 826 Valencia.

I chose to depict The Horse and Groom.
“A groom used to spend whole days in currycombing her horse, at the same time stealing his oats and selling them for her own profit. “Alas!” said the Horse, “if you really wish me to be in good condition, you should groom me less, and feed me more.”
