More mini-journal making: A last minute handmade holiday project! The perfect addendum to your store bought gift

minijournal
Perhaps you’ve already done your shopping and you want to add a handmade addendum to your gifts to personalize them. Making mini-journals is the perfect way to do that. They are so fun to make. I’ve made about a million this gift season. I use mine like a blackberry minus the emailing and internet searching. I keep them in all of my bags for taking notes, writing down great ideas, or destinations I need to get to etc. I love giving gifts that are useful in some way and ephemeral. I mean permanence is nice but I love the idea that these are precious but only for a time. They’re meant for active use not just to sit pretty on a shelf someplace. Here are my other DIY craft projects for you to try as well: Mini-Journal makinggold leaf journals, festive necklace how-to, feather hair accessory how-to (all gift possibilities).

And now for the latest winter holiday themed journal how-to:

  1. Cut a piece of oak tag, metallic paper, and Kraft paper (or colored construction paper) for the “cover” the same size and fold like a card
  2. With a glue stick glue your “cover” to the oak tag and the metallic paper as inside paper
  3. Cut printer paper as your inside pages (I round the edges or cut in a wavy shape) and staple inside (If you want to hide the staples do this step before gluing the cover paper on the oak tag)
  4. Here’s where you get creative: Buy a snowflake stamp and stamp it all over cover to make a lacy snowflake effect, cut cool shapes out of metallic paper and glue on, get snowflake punchers from art/craft store and cut metallic snowflakes out and glue stick on to cover, use a matte knife (carefully) and cut out shapes to glue on to cover….any or all of these ideas are fun and easy to do and give the journal a wintery feel.

Et viola! Read the first journal making how-to for more binding techniques and enjoy this project. I suggest wrapping a small bunch of different size journals together as an addendum to a store bought gift or as a sole gift. Enjoy happy holiday crafting!

Eye On Style: A closer look at that person in the street fashion photo

Eye On Style
I love street style blogs. Some of my favorites are Garance Dore, Helsinki Style, Face Hunter, and of course The Sartorialist. I could stare at the beautiful clothing in real life context for hours. When I think about it, it’s not solely the clothing that evokes such interest but the people wearing it. I look at their faces, the way they carry themselves and wonder what their lives are like and who they are inside.

Mary Jo Matsumoto of Trust Your Style has started a new series on personal style by asking people what influences their style, what they do, and who they are. It’s like taking a deeper look at style photos. I loved participating and wish I had worn something a little fancier. I was really busy when she asked me so I just sent a photo I had of me in an everyday outfit. I’m loving the other people she’s featuring.

Check her blog out for more and read up on the participants up until now in Eye on Style. I especially enjoyed MJM’s latest participant Anne Sage of the blog City Sage. Check it out.

Food For Thought: Photographer Erin Gleeson’s glamorous Payard pastry photos + I’m “Smitten”

Before I show you Erin’s fabulous photography check out Joanna Goddard’s post about the funny way I met my husband on the Glamour Magazine blog Smitten.

Erin's Payard Pastry
Erin Gleeson and I met on the rooftop of our building on the night of the big New York black out and have been friends ever since. We share a love for food and art about food. I’m so excited to announce Erin’s exhibit in Manhattan at the Broadway Gallery in Soho on December 19th. Come for holiday sweets and drinks and to see photographs from Erin’s new “Payard Series”, featuring Francois Payard’s desserts. I love the way she juxtaposes glamorous photos and rich fashion textures with luscious pastries in the foreground.

Erin Gleeson finds glamour and beauty in cuisine both everyday and exotic in her photography. In the ‘Payard Series’ Erin teamed up with the renowned pastry chef Francois Payard to create ethereal, colorful collages that mingle food and fantasy. I hope to see you at the show!

Newly reupholstered chair: pin-up fabric printed by Spoonflower

Spoonflower reupholstered chair
Spoonflower reupholstered chair2
I regret not taking a “before” photo of this Danish modern chair I purchased at a Brooklyn flea market a couple of months ago ($80- booyah!). The fabric was ratty and hideous but I knew that I was going to have it reupholstered with my own print in a matter of time. I had just completed this design for Craft Magazine that was printed for a feature on Spoonflower so I contacted them about printing up my pin-up/starlot design for me.

They are not officially doing upholstery weight fabric yet but happened to have canvas laying around in the yardage I needed. I can’t believe how accessible they are and willing to work with artist requests. I spoke with Stephen Fraser who talked me through the process of uploading my fabric. Then I had a tailor cover the old cushions with my new design of starlots. I even had them add trim. I love the way it looks now. I actually planned the colorway to go with my walls and the painting I did of my dear friend. I’m really excited to use Spoonflower again soon. I have a trade show coming up so I better get going with my next order!
